Unsafe Piercings We Don't Offer And Why
At Cherry Bomb Studio, safety, ethics, and anatomy-based piercing practices are our top priorities. While some piercings might look impressive on social media platforms like Pinterest or TikTok, this doesn't necessarily mean they're safe or sustainable for your body. Below, we've outlined several piercings we refuse to perform, along with our reasoning.
Snake Eyes (Horizontal Tongue Tip Piercing)
This piercing essentially binds together the independent muscles that help you speak, eat, and swallow. Over time, we've observed that it frequently leads to chipped teeth, gum recession, speech difficulties, and migration through the tissue. Long-term damage to the tongue structure is unfortunately common, which is why most professional piercers consider this piercing unethical.
Smiley / Frowny (Lip Frenulum Piercings)
The frenulum is an extremely delicate, thin piece of tissue that typically cannot support jewelry for extended periods. Smiley piercings often wear down tooth enamel, cause gum damage, and have an exceptionally high rejection rate. In our experience, most of these piercings reject within mere months of placement.
Scoop Piercing
Sometimes incorrectly called "Frog Eyes," this single horizontal piercing through the tongue muscle (typically done with a curved barbell) severely restricts natural tongue movement. It significantly increases the risk of nerve damage and tooth and gum trauma, while almost invariably leading to migration or rejection. The healing process is particularly challenging due to constant movement and moisture in the oral environment. Despite its subtle appearance, the health risks completely outweigh any aesthetic benefits.
Surface Piercings with Curved Barbells
Curved barbells are fundamentally inappropriate for surface piercings. They consistently lead to rejection, scarring, and ongoing irritation. We firmly believe that surface piercings should only be performed with properly designed flat surface bars—and even then, only in anatomically suitable locations.
Finger Piercings and Most Microdermals
Our fingers move constantly, bump into countless objects throughout the day, and have minimal tissue to properly anchor jewelry. These piercings almost inevitably get caught on clothing and objects, reject from the body, and leave noticeable scarring. Similarly, dermal implants in high-contact areas present too many complications to be considered viable long-term modifications.
Princess Albertina Piercing
This female genital piercing passes through the urethra and exits through the vaginal wall. It's associated with a significantly elevated risk of urinary tract infections during healing. The procedure's complexity and potential for altering normal urinary flow make it particularly hazardous, which is why we've chosen not to offer it.
Eyelid and Eyeball Piercings
Piercings involving the eyelid or surrounding eyeball area carry extreme risks, including potential vision damage, severe infections, and extended healing periods. The delicate nature of the eye region makes these piercings dangerously susceptible to complications.
Nape Piercings
These surface piercings at the back of the neck are extremely prone to migration and rejection due to constant movement and pressure. The heightened risk of scarring and infection makes them poor candidates for long-term success.
Hip Piercings
Hip piercings are surface piercings located near the pelvic area, typically positioned on either side of the hips. Their surface placement makes these piercings prone to rejection, where the body pushes the jewelry out, often resulting in scarring. The hip area experiences constant friction from clothing and movement, increasing infection risk without meticulous care. Even with proper care, noticeable scarring remains possible if the piercing migrates, rejects, or requires removal. Hip piercings typically require a prolonged healing period of 6-12 months, demanding consistent aftercare.
Our Philosophy
Just because it's physically possible to pierce a body part doesn't mean it's safe, ethical, or responsible to do so. At Cherry Bomb Studio, we only perform piercings that respect your anatomy and have a reasonable chance of healing properly. We firmly believe your safety takes precedence over fleeting trends.
