Getting a Tattoo in the Summer Months: Special Care
Follow your tattoo artist's instructions
Your tattoo artist will provide specific aftercare instructions. Follow them closely as we tailor them to your specific tattoo–the location on the body, technique, etc. Instructions may include washing the tattoo gently, applying a recommended ointment, and keeping it clean and protected.
Avoid direct sunlight
Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight, especially during the initial healing phase. Sun exposure can cause fading, blistering, and other complications. Cover your tattoo with loose clothing when outdoors if your tattoo is in an exposed area. Consider staying in the shade or using an umbrella to minimize direct sunlight exposure.
Apply sunscreen (after initial healing)
Once your tattoo has fully healed and the scabs or peeling skin has resolved, you can start applying sunscreen to protect the tattoo from UV rays. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and apply it generously to the tattooed area before going outside. Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially if you're swimming or sweating.
Avoid swimming in pools, oceans, or hot tubs
Avoid submerging your healing tattoo in bodies of water, such as pools, oceans, or hot tubs, as they can introduce bacteria or irritants that may hinder the healing process. Wait until your tattoo fully heals before swimming or soaking.
Stay hydrated
Proper hydration is crucial for skin health and healing. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially in hot weather, to hydrate your body and skin.
Wear loose, breathable clothing
Opt for loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics to allow your tattoo to breathe and prevent excessive sweating. Tight or abrasive clothing can irritate the tattooed area and hinder healing.
Avoid excessive sweating and physical activities
Intense physical activities and excessive sweating can irritate and potentially affect the healing process. Avoid activities that may cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattooed area until fully healed.
Remember, each tattoo and individual healing process is unique, so it's essential to consult with your tattoo artist for specific guidance. If you notice any signs of infection or have concerns about the healing process, contact a healthcare professional or your tattoo artist for further advice.
