What’s in a name? Piercing names and locations

When Googling, you may find many different names for the same piercing. Why is this? The variation in names for the same piercing can be attributed to several factors.

Regional and cultural differences:

  • Different regions or countries may have their own names or terminology for specific piercings. Cultural practices and traditions can also influence the naming conventions used for piercings. For example, a piercing that is commonly known as a "tragus piercing" in one country may be referred to by a different name in another.

Personal preferences and interpretations

  • Individuals within the piercing community may have their own preferred names for specific piercings. This can be influenced by personal interpretations, aesthetic preferences, or associations with specific jewelry placements. As a result, you may encounter different names used by different individuals or piercing enthusiasts.

Miscommunication or lack of standardization

  • Due to the decentralized nature of the piercing industry, there is no universal governing body that sets standardized terminology for piercings. This can lead to miscommunication or discrepancies in naming, as piercers and enthusiasts may use different terms to describe the same piercing. Lack of standardization can contribute to the variation in names encountered when researching piercings.
